Primary Industries provide products and services in response to the demand not only for food and fibre but also for recreational and leisure activities. These products and services influence the daily lives of all members of society.

What will I be doing in this course?

This course will be based on units of competency, which will be drawn from the following training packages: Rural Production – RTE02, Amenity Horticulture – RTF02 and Conservation and Land Management – RTD02.

The course is designed to enable students to acquire a broad range of skills and knowledge related to work and employment in the primary industries sector. Depending on the units of competency studied, students will be able to develop their expertise in Plant and Animal Production, Conservation and Land Management, Horticulture and Basic Farm Operations.

Throughout this course students will develop knowledge about:

  • Plant identification and propagation
  • Livestock care and handling
  • Safe chemical use
  • Pest and disease control
  • Tractor operation and maintenance
  • Fencing for livestock – installation and repair

How will this course help me in the future?

On successful completion on this course students may receive a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management (RTD20212) or Certificate II in Agriculture (RTE20103), Certificate II in Horticulture (RTF20213) or Certificate II in Rural Operations (RTE20703); opportunity to undertake Certificate III in Horticulture.

Examples of occupations students can aim for in primary industries include: animal attending, beef production, crop production, dairy farming, farm management, fertiliser sales, horse care, livestock rearing and breeding, nursery management, pest and disease control, poultry production, research, rural merchandising, shearing, sheep and wool production, veterinary nursing and manager/owner of a small business.
