CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

The Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Faculty at Kelso High Campus is run by a dedicated team who specialise in a diverse range of creative disciplines including artmaking, visual design, music, performance, drama, dance, circus arts, entertainment as well as, photography and digital imaging. Students are provided with high quality learning experiences that support and challenge them to achieve their full creative potential.

Creative Arts programs at Kelso High provide opportunities for students to enjoy creative learning experiences whilst developing skills in both the classroom and in extra-curricular areas. Through their experiences they develop a close bond with students from all years, working together with staff to produce high quality, innovative works in all areas.

Creative Learning Opportunities in Years 7-8

Students are actively involved in Visual Arts and Music classes during Years 7-8. They have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills in Dance, Drama and Music by joining a variety of groups, such as Dance Ensemble (experienced dance students), Dance Group (beginners), Dance for Sport, Concert and Stage Bands, String Ensemble, Musical Theatre and Vocal Ensembles.

Creative Learning Opportunities in Years 9-12

Students can select our subjects as electives from Year 9 – 12. Subjects offered include:

  • Photographic & Digital Media
  • Visual Arts
  • Visual Design

Students who are part of Dance Ensembles have the opportunity to participate in NAIDOC Dance Camp, State Ensemble, Dance Camp, School Spectacular, Bathurst Eisteddfod, excursions to Sydney for Bangarra Dance Theatre and Sydney Dance Company as well as a variety of workshops.

Drama students annually travel to Sydney for Onstage and other musical and theatre productions and workshops, and to local productions when available.

Music students may join the Concert or Stage bands, String Ensemble and Vocal Ensembles. They also have the opportunity to form various small ensembles in both jazz, rock and pop. Various groups regularly compete at local eisteddfods, with excursions travelling to Sydney for Encore and a variety of musical and theatrical performances.

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of circus activities with the view to auditioning for the school’s circus troupe Cirkus Surreal. Students have the opportunity to participate in fitness and circus training before school, as well as during sport time. Students who become part of Cirkus Surreal perform at a variety of events throughout the year, with a large performance night biannually. Every two to three years the troupe travel overseas to work with other schools, view Cirque du Soleil performances as well as other circus type events.

Visual Arts and Photography students have the opportunity to visit local, State and National art galleries through regular excursions. Each year HSC students participate in an exhibition of their Bodies of Works. Students participate in art competitions and are encouraged to enter their artworks in the Royal Bathurst Show through the school.

Extra-curricular

Apart from the Drama, Music, Circus and Dance opportunities already mentioned, Kelso High aims to put on a musical biannually. Students from Years 7 – 11 are encouraged to try out for numerous roles including acting, dance, singing / chorus, band, sound and lighting, backstage, set design, costumes and other supporting roles.

The CAPA Faculty is well-equipped to provide students with high quality, contemporary learning experiences via:

  • 3 spacious art rooms
  • Artist quality facilities for ceramics and printmaking, including printing press, potters wheels, slip casting moulds
  • A fully-equipped darkroom for wet photography
  • High resolution digital cameras and printing facilities
  • Portable photographic studio complete with green screen
  • 2 music rooms and performance space
  • Baby Grand Piano
  • Classroom sets of keyboards and guitars
  • Full complement of lighting, sound and visual – both analogue and digital
  • A drama room with lighting, mirrors and dance bars
